One major way citizens can have a positive impact on the future of Orange County is to volunteer to serve on the various county advisory boards and commissions.
The Orange County Board of Commissioners is currently recruiting for the Orange County Board of Equalization and Review. This board hears appeals from citizens who are protesting assessed property values. The Board of Equalization and Review is charged with ensuring that all taxable property is appraised according to the standards required by the General Statutes of North Carolina.
The Orange County Board of Equalization and Review will meet up to three days per week for approximately three to four hours per meeting for up to three consecutive months (April through June). Members will be paid for all meetings attended.
Interested Orange County residents with knowledge of real estate are encouraged to apply. Other interested residents will also be given consideration. If interested, apply at www.co.orange.nc.us/boards.

N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service announces 2012 AmeriCorps State Formula Planning Grant
The North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service announces that the 2012 AmeriCorps State Formula Planning Grant is available for nonprofit and government organizations.
The planning grants are small grants for organizations that have never operated an AmeriCorps program. In addition, grants will support the development of a program that will engage members in evidence-based interventions to solve community problems. The planning grants do not come with member positions and recipients are not guaranteed future operational funding. Public or private nonprofit organizations that have not received AmeriCorps state or national funds in the past are eligible to apply.
All grant applications are due to the commission no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, March 16. Applications can be submitted electronically to Ray.Riordan@nc.gov or by mail. Mail applications must be received by that date, not postmarked by that date. For more information, visit www.VolunteerNC.org.

OWASA hosts blood drive
On Friday, Feb. 24, OWASA will sponsor an American Red Cross blood drive from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room on the lower floor of OWASA’s Administration Building, 400 Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro.
“The winter months are particularly challenging, so we are especially grateful to those who roll up their sleeves this time of year,” said Caroline Allison, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative for the Carolinas Blood Services Region. “Patients in our area hospitals depend on the generosity of blood donors every day. There is always a special need for donors with type O negative blood. O negative is the universal blood type and can be given to patients of any type in an emergency situation.”
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood, and volunteer donors are the only source.
Donors must be in general good health, have photo identification, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be at least 17 years old or 16 years old with parental consent. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet height and weight requirements
People who come to donate will have the chance to win a pair of roundtrip domestic tickets from Delta Air Lines and be entered to win one of three three-day oceanfront vacation rentals at the Islander Inn and Suites on Emerald Isle, courtesy of Bluewater Real Estate and Vacation Rentals.

This 12-member committee works to maintain the intent of the Adult Care Home Residents’ Bill of Rights for those residing in licensed adult care homes. The members of this committee also promote community involvement and cooperation with these homes to ensure quality care for the elderly and disabled adults. Members are appointed by the Board of Commissioners to at-large positions. There is an initial one-year training term with subsequent eligibility for three additional two-year terms.

Orange County Rape Crisis Center seeks volunteers
The Orange County Rape Crisis Center is accepting applications for our upcoming volunteer training classes that will begin in early February. The center seeks dedicated individuals with diverse backgrounds to volunteer.
Volunteer positions include community educators and crisis companions. Community educators prevent sexual violence in our community by presenting educational programs to students in local schools. Crisis companions provide support and resources to survivors by responding to our 24-hour help line.
The deadline for applications is Friday, Jan. 27. Spanish-speakers and individuals with daytime and weekday availability are strongly encouraged to apply. Training will be provided and begins Saturday, Feb. 4.
The Center relies on volunteers to help provide our core programs and services. We have approximately 100 volunteers at any given time. Executive Director Shamecca Bryant says, “Community participation is crucial for the center. With a diverse volunteer pool, students in our education programs are able to learn from community members who share their background and experiences.”

Deadling extended for emergency services work group applicants
The deadline for applications for resident volunteers for the Orange County emergency services work group is now Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2012.
The Orange County Board of Commissioners is recruiting two resident volunteers for the Orange County Emergency Services Work Group. The work group will provide recommendations on improving emergency medical services including ambulance response time, fire department issues such as items impacting home owner insurance ratings, and radio communications improvements for medical, fire and law enforcement personnel. Community applicants represent someone who may need to call 911 at any time during an emergency. Applicants do not need a background in emergency services.
This work group will address issues related to improving public safety for the residents of Orange County, such as:
• E911 Communications Center Improvement Plan;
• Discussion with the Board of Commissioners regarding plans to improve the EMS delivery system;
• Review of Fire Department issues relating to fire protection districts, fire insurance districts, and fire tax districts as related to property insurance ratings;
• Review of the VIPER ( Voice Interoperability Plan for Emergency Responders) original design and implementation and strategies to improve coverage and capacity.

Volunteer with the Salvation Army
The Salvation Army still needs volunteers to ring bells at its Red Kettles in Durham, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. Opportunities are available Monday through Saturday at locations including Southpoint and Northgate malls, Walmarts, Krogers, Harris Teeters and the Durham K-Mart. Volunteers may sign up online at any time or call (919) 688-7306, ext. 112, between 8 a.m. and noon and 1 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
