The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued an excessive heat warning...which is in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening. The heat advisory is no longer in effect. The combination of very high humidity and temperatures near 100 degrees will produce dangerous heat indices at or above 110 degrees this afternoon. Additional heat advisories or warnings will likely be needed through the weekend as the heat wave continues. Precautionary/preparedness actions... An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids...stay in an air-conditioned room...stay out of the sunshine...and check up on relatives and neighbors. Heat of this magnitude can be particularly deadly for the elderly...those with illnesses...and for outdoor workers such as farm laborers.
