home-schoolers Civil War Day

I was invited up to Hurdle Mills to watch a group of home-school kids delve deeply into the Civil War. The grand finale was a re-enactment of the Battle of Chancellorsville, which the Union lost despite outnumbering the Rebels 2:1.

It was really great to see a group of kids so interested in learning. These students were able to really probe the areas of the Civil War that interested them—be they tactics, the people of the era or Civil War medicine.

But was really refreshing was their enthusiasm for what they were learning. Even as they were pelting each other with Nerf guns (for the re-enactment, of course), the wheels in their heads were spinning. One girl, Johanna Addison, said the re-enactment made the battle seem more real to her.

Looking at these pictures, it's easy to see why. Enjoy!
